In Linwood, Kansas, the Leavenworth County Fire District No.2 had been dispatched to assist the Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Office with the rescue of a German shepherd from Stranger Creek.

On February 25, rescuers arrived at the creek. The dog had been stuck approximately 15 feet below and because of the steep and slippery conditions was not able to climb his way to safety. Fortunately, two Good Samaritans had been out for a walk when they heard the dog whimpering in the Leavenworth County’s Stranger Creek and called for help.

The awesome bystanders who called after discovering the dog, were Destiny Mesias and her boyfriend, Kevin Pauly. The banks at the location were steep and slick, leaving the dog unable to climb out on its own.

Pauly rushed over to the dog and used a strap to help hold its head above water while waiting for first responders. Pauly tried to reassure the dog help was on the way, but the dog whined at him. Pauly then was confident the dog would allow him to put the strap around its waist, helping the dog to be a bit more secure while rescuers worked.

The dog repeatedly began to lose consciousness in the water.

Held his head up a little bit, we just kept talking to him as he kept trying to nod off into the water. Leavenworth County Fire District 2 Assistant Chief Dylan Ritter said the dog had likely been in the water three to four hours by the time crews arrived. The steep bank required crews to use ropes to reach the water.

According to Riverview Rescue, the sheriff’s office responded quickly as did the Leavenworth County Fire District no. 2 and the Northwest Consolidated Fire District who were able to respond with a boat to assist in the rescue.

Together these amazing rescuers saved the dog’s life. When found he had no collar nor a microchip. It is believed he had been in the water for a few days and definitely had been completely exhausted.

Authorities handed the dog to Riverview Rescue in Leavenworth for care. The German Shepherd was later reunited with its owner, who told authorities the dog had been missing for two days.
