Just a few days ago, Bambi arrived at the Kentucky Humane Society extremely emaciated. The 10-year-old dog broke the staff’s heart. Who could be so cruel to intentionally starve such a sweet and lovable dog?

When she arrived, Bambi only weighed 14 pounds; a weight of at least 30 pounds is considered normal for a dog of her breed and body type. Veterinarians gave her a body score of “1” out of a possible “9.” Every bone in her body protruded, and her muscles had wasted away as she fought for her life. Her body was so weak, it had been an exhausting task just for Bambi to walk across the examination room. And as a senior dog, her body condition is even more critical.

Bambi immediately began to receive intensive care and close monitoring. She was prescribed a careful refeeding schedule so as not to reintroduce food too quickly.

Bambi spent the weekend in a foster home with a staff member and has already gained four pounds in just under a week. Her body score still remains very poor, and her healing journey is far from over, however the organization is happy to know that her health is slowly improving.

Bambi still needs to gain at least ten more pounds before she is considered a “healthy.” Prolonged starvation, however takes a toll on every part of the body. Bambi’s muscles are nearly nonexistent because her body had to deplete muscle mass over time to compensate for lack of nutrition.

We’re grateful Bambi made it to KHS where she will receive endless tender loving care. We promise to be by her side until she is happy and healthy again.
