The Calhoun County Animal Control, located in Anniston, Alabama is caring for a dog rescued on Thursday from a stretch of I-20, near Oxford by a very observant and compassionate truck driver from South Carolina.

Traffic had been speeding along at 70 miles per hour when the driver realized it was a dog; concrete barriers had boxed her in on both sides. The stray pup had no means of escape, and she crouched in fear as the noises and rush of traffic shook the roadway ground beneath her.

As we know, angels don’t always have wings. And this time, a truck driver emerged as the frightened dog’s hero. The driver pulled over; she had quickly realized the “object” in the median was a live, breathing dog who desperately needed a miracle to survive.

The driver pulled up along the shoulder of the highway and started making calls for help. Rescuing a stray can be very frustrating, but this truck driver wasn’t giving up. She truly persisted until she was able to get help:

Let’s put the whole story out there. This sweet lady, Brandy, was persistent in wanting to get this dog to safety. She contacted me at head to tail grooming when she couldn’t get any help from the numerous phone calls she made. I put her in contact with Melissa green because of her experience with dog rescue . I knew she would know who to contact to get help for this dog. And she came through. Thank you to Melissa, Naomi and Michelle for their assistance in getting this dog to safety and also to Brandy, the truck driver who wouldn’t go on until this baby was safe.

Oxford Fire Department responded and slowed traffic to create a protective barrier on one of the busiest interstates:

We were happy to play a small roll in helping Annie find safety! Thank you to everyone that helped get this sweet girl off the interstate.

No doubt the teamwork helped to save the dog dubbed Annie. Area residents and motorists stopped to help, offering towels and water as traffic continued to be carefully monitored making sure Annie was safe.

The rescue of Annie took time; she was scared, but patience and calm voices helped to overcome her panic. Annie was tired, but for the first time, a person was slowly walking towards her, and Annie felt that woman was there to help.

Carefully, she was lifted into a crate and carried to safety. Annie is no longer a stray stuck in the middle of the busy I-20.

(Note: Social media posted that the truck driver, Brandy is interested in adopting Annie. We will follow the story and hopefully be able to report another happy ending.)
