In Bridport, Dorset, a town in England, rescuers spent 11 hours which involved 40 coastguard teams and firemen, rescuing a family’s cockapoo who had fallen halfway down a cliff.

Luna, the cockapoo, had become trapped 164 feet below the top of the Thorncombe Beacon on Thursday, February 20, 2026. Rescuers had to postpone the pup’s rescue attempts at nightfall and as inclement weather approached.
According to the Bridport Fire Station’s Facebook page, a technical rescue team from Weymouth Fire Station had been mobilized to Seatown this morning to assist.

Resuming the rescue attempts on Friday morning, the teams used ropes to lower themselves down to the dog. She was later secured in a rescue cot and winched up to safety.
Luna was later reunited with her family and luckily had not suffered any injuries.
This was an excellent example of multi-agency collaboration, with rescue services working seamlessly together to bring a challenging incident to a successful conclusion.
Dog owners are urged to keep their pets safely leashed. Luna was a lucky pooch – not all dogs who accidentally fall over cliffs are as fortunate. We love our pets, so let’s protect them.
