In New Kent County, Virginia, a pregnant dog had been discovered with a cable snare trap around her neck, causing her head to swell nearly twice its size and endangering the life of her unborn puppy.

It had been on January 19 when the dog, later named Maude, had been found along the side of a road wrapped in the coyote trap, causing what rescuers stated as a “disgusting amount of damage.”

When she was captured, she was transported to a nearby veterinary hospital, where the staff and volunteers caring for her, were pleased with how well she was recovering. The swelling to her face resolved, and she was described as happy to see and meet new people . The Animal Protection Department added they couldn’t believe it had been the same dog. She was closely monitored since she was pregnant and reported to be carrying one puppy.
It is believed Maude got caught in a cable snare trap which is used to trap coyotes. The trap tightens like a zip tie as the animal struggles to get free. When found she was in a lot of pain. Maude was rushed to an emergency veterinarian hospital.

On Jan. 26, Maude was discharged from the veterinarian, and during her first day with the Animal Protection Unit team, she gave birth to her one puppy.
She is set up in our (whelping) box room and doing fantastic. We had her checked by a local veterinarian to see if we should expect any more puppies, and it turns out, she is a mother to a spoiled only child.
Maude is doing well and so is her puppy.
The New Kent Sheriff’s Office continues to ask for the public’s help for information. Someone knows where this trap came from, and someone may know who Maude belonged to.
