A six-month-old Australian shepherd was rescued from the iced-over waters of the Detroit River after crossing East River Road on January 19. It had been the Grosse Ile Police who responded to a report of a dog that had run onto the iced-over waters of the Detroit River.

The puppy, named Stella had escaped through a fence and became stuck about 350 yards offshore.

Initial efforts by the police department involved using drones for tracking Stella as the Grosse Ile Fire Department deployed an airboat to rescue the pup.

The Grosse Ile Fire Department determined ice conditions had not been safe for personnel on foot; multiple rescue attempts were made using the fire department’s airboat. As the airboat was returning to shore following severa; attempts, the dog was observed in the water and was immediately rescued.

After four-hours of steadfast work and perseverance, Stella was safely reunited with her family, who expressed their gratitude to all responders involved.

Many thanks to the members of the Grosse Ile Police Department and Grosse Ile Fire Department that assisted in this incident, along with Animal Control Officer Julie Cortis-Redfield. Many thanks to the residents who provided assistance during the incident.
