Amidst the snow, ice and freezing temperatures in Philadelphia this week, a stray pup had been abandoned; left alone, injured and scared, Sven was determined to find help.

Just two days ago, the Animal Care & Control Team of Philadelphia brought Sven to the Pennsylvania SPCA after responding to a call about the stray pup, who had been found at the back door of a home struggling to walk. His tiny body was severely undernourished – his backbone and ribs stood out, and there was little doubt he had been neglected.

Alone, injured and scared. That’s how Sven’s story began. All that had been left of his previous life had been a thick, filthy, red collar loosely hanging around his neck.

Sven was rushed to the emergency SPCA hospital where his prognosis was guarded
Pressure sores covered his body; his lower half was stained and caked with dirt, and he was infested with fleas while suffering from mild hypothermia. He flinched when anyone reached out, but even through his fear, it was clear how badly he wanted to trust and feel safe.

And now just a few days later, Sven’s wounds have been cleaned and he is on a carefully monitored refeeding plan. He is warm, safe and beginning to feel better and more secure.
For the first time in a long time, Sven is feeling hopeful.
He may have had a painful past, but his story is far from over.
Now his new story begins.
