In South Africa, a pilot and three passengers were lucky to have survived uninjured after their helicopter crashed from a low altitude.
According to BBCNews, the South African Civil Aviation Authority stated the “unsecured” penguin in a cardboard box caused the accident in January 2025. The pilot and passengers had been conducting an aerial survey of an island near South Africa’s Eastern Cape when one of the passengers asked that the penguin be returned to the island when making the trip. The pilot agreed, and the penguin was then placed in a cardboard box ready for its flight home.

On the helicopter, one of the passengers held the box with the penguin. During pre-flight checks however, the penguin had not been reported as on the aircraft or as part of his flight plan.
As the helicopter flew at approximately 50 feet, the cardboard box slid off the passenger’s lap and onto the pilot’s control lever. The helicopter rolled towards the right, and the pilot was not able to recover; as the aircraft descended, the main rotor blades struck the ground, and the helicopter landed on its side only 60 feet from where it had taken off.
The helicopter sustained significant damage, but the pilot, the passengers and the penguin were all unharmed.
In accordance with safety standards, the penguin created a dangerous situation. The animal should have been properly secured and obviously not carried in an open cardboard box.
this accident emphasizes the importance of adhering to established safety protocol and compliance with aviation safety rules.
