Early Thursday morning at Cincinnati Animal Care, AppleButter was found tied to the fence. She had been left abandoned, alone and fighting for her life.

The rescue team discovered the English bulldog had been shot in the chest. She had lost a liter of blood, which had to be injected back into her to keep her from bleeding out. Against all odds, AppleButter pulled through and is now stable.

She is recovering in a mobile intensive care unit and continues to receive oxygen, fluids and pain medications.

She is on a lot of medicine, of course, but she was outside earlier. We brought her outside. She can stand up on her own, which is unbelievable given she was injured by a gunshot less than 12 hours ago.
As Hamilton County’s ONLY open-intake shelter, the staff doesn’t have all the fancy equipment of an ER vet, but a recent grant that allowed them to purchase the portable ICU as they continue to build out the in-house lifesaving capabilities.
This ICU is now helping to provide careful 24/7 control of AppleButter environment throughout her recovery. With innovation, resourcefulness, generous support and the dedication of the organization’s incredible team, they make lifesaving care happen every day.
AppleButter’s fight isn’t over. She needs your help to continue her recovery. We are raising $5,000 for her lifesaving care. Donate today to support her care and other animals like her.

The Cincinnati Police Department is currently investigating the incident and are asking members of the public if they know anything about the dog, her owners or the circumstances surrounding this situation.

And the best news for AppleButter’s Friday health update as she continues to recover. She is no longer being given fluids and is now on oral medications. She is eating well and has even been outside to enjoy the fresh air.
With many thanks to the community and animal lovers everywhere, more than $10,000 has been raised to not only help AppleButter but also to help other dogs in dire need.
AppleButter is not ready for adoption yet, however there are 300 dogs waiting to be loved and taken home. Every dog has a story, and we all want to give each and every one a happy future.
