Along the Gulf Coast, Louisiana is famous for the bayous. The area is a network of slow-moving waterways, swamps, and marshes known for their rich ecosystems and unique Cajun culture. They are vital for wildlife and fishing and offer many outdoor activities like swamp tours and fishing. Sadly, the area has also become a dumping ground for unwanted pets. Survival is difficult – to say the least.

Family dogs, too often wind up being dropped off by their owners who never gave a second thought about abandoning their pets; the dogs do their best to survive and scrounge around for any scraps of food they can find.

Just recently a friendly dog had been searching the area for food. Neighbors didn’t know who he was and called out “Go Away.” Although that was obviously a slur just to get the dog to leave, every time someone shouted the two words, the dog lifted his head with hope. His tail would wag, and he hoped someone would throw him a scrap or two of food.

Sadly, the food scraps never came. Instead the area residents shouted “Go Away.”
And in addition, people would throw stones at him, stamp their feet to shoo him away and yell at him.
Still, the dog stayed and continued to return. And although he did learn that “Go Away” meant he was told to get lost and that he was not wanted, he watched from a safe distance, quietly eating scraps and searching through trash just to stave off the hunger pains in his belly.
Oddly, dogs like this never seem to give up. He always had hope and never left the area where he was abandoned by his owner. “Go Away” always held out hope he would one day be heading home.
And one day… hope arrived.
Someone knelt down, not to throw stones, but to offer a hand. She didn’t chase him, but quietly motioned him to come closer. And in that moment, the dog’s entire world changed.
Then there was a name for him. The rescuer called him “Sam.” It was a real name, a promise and a beginning. Sam will never have to suffer from the freezing temperatures or the extreme heat. No one will yell at him again and no one would ever call him.
Sam will never again feel the scorch of pavement on burning paws or shiver through freezing nights, nor will he ever hear “Go Away” again. His name is Sam.

He is now wanted, loved and headed to Long Island Pit Stop Rescue. Please honor your pledges. Donations are really needed. If you’d like to donate, their PayPal address is [email protected].”
