Six-month-old orphaned manatee calf rescued by wildlife officials and dedicated volunteers

In Crystal River, Florida a six-month-old, undernourished orphaned manatee calf was rescued on Monday according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

River Ventures – Swim with Manatees spotted this little calf alone a few days ago and had been monitoring him closely, knowing that something was not right. He was too small to make it on his own, and had approached several female manatees to nurse in his search for his mom.

  • The FWC says the injured calf is in thin condition. They say he is less than six months old and only five and a half feet long.
  • He is now at Zoo Tampa for rehabilitation and care.
