Call Ozzy a miracle puppy; he sure had the will to survive when an unknown heartless monster stuffed him in a trash bag, left him in a container for hours, and then threw him out of a moving vehicle in Battle Creek on August 13.

According to the All Species Kinship (A.S.K.) Ozzy had been tied up when thrown out of a vehicle. Fortunately, a Good Samaritan who had her window down while at a stop sign heard tiny cries. She discovered the puppy and knew he was in critical condition; nearly suffocating in the trash bag.

The woman notified A.S.K., and the puppy was rushed to an emergency animal hospital. At that point his prognosis was unknown; veterinarians were not sure Ozzy would survive. He had been suffering from heat stroke, was covered in fly larvae and was having seizures. It was suspected Ozzy had been in a trash can for an extended period of time.

And now, just two weeks later, Sophia DiPietro, executive director of All Species Kinship (A.S.K.), stated Ozzie is making miraculous strides towards his recovery. He has been gaining weight, but he seems to be a cautious little guy, and perhaps his hesitation when being held is due to the horrible cruelty and neglect he has already gone through – especially at such an early age.

It will become a wait and see – how Ozzy’s personality develops. Sadly, he is deaf, and that might have been due to brain damage. His eyesight, however seems to have improved; the staff feared he might also have been blind.

Ozzy is able to eat on his own and can control his bladder functions. Maybe his future isn’t going to be one of a puppy who had a lot better first introduction to life, but Ozzy’s will to survive is a testament to this little guy’s stamina and desire to live a full life.

Ozzy will get to take his time with his recovery, and hopefully at some time in the future, his dream for a loving home will become a reality.

Less than a week after Ozzy was found in a garbage bag, another dog that looked exactly alike, was discovered along the same Battle Creek road. Sadly, that puppy had died, and it is believed he may have been part of Ozzy’s litter. DNA has since been taken from both puppies to determine if there was a relation.
The case remains under investigation. Anyone with information or who recognized Ozzy is asked to contact the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office.
