The Hawaii Police Department issued a heartbreaking announcement last Friday stating one of their K9 officers died after having been left in a police vehicle in West Hawaii for an “unacceptable amount of time.”
Chief Reed Mahuna listed K9 Officer Archer’s death as a “preventable tragedy,” reinforcing rules that dogs should not be left in vehicles for any period of time. An investigation both criminal and investigative has been promised.

K9 Officer Archer was a six-and-a-half-year-old Belgian Malinois/German shepherd blend from Hungary. He joined the force in 2020 and was trained in drug detection and helping to keep dangerous contraband off the streets.
Archer was not just a police dog, he was a partner, protector, and a member of our police family.
Hundreds of dogs die from being left in vehicles every year. Please be mindful of leaving pets in the car.
Rest in peace Archer.
