Four newborn puppies were found abandoned in a box along a walking trail in Harford County early Saturday morning. The puppies are being cared for at the Humane Society of Harford County (HSHC). Sadly, the smallest puppy in the litter did not survive.

The box was discovered off Route 7 and Creswell Road in Belcamp, near the Riverside Apartments on October18. Morning temperatures registered in the low 50s.

It had been a Good Samaritan who found the four puppies; only a day or two old. Their eyes were still closed, completely defenseless, and without their mother.

When the puppies arrived at HSHC, the team immediately began emergency care, warming them in an incubator and bottle-feeding them every few hours. While one tiny pup sadly didn’t make it, the remaining three are now safe, stable, and thriving in the loving care of a foster family.

As a reminder to everyone, besides being illegal to abandon an animal, just think of the terrible suffering they have to endure when left completely helpless.

Whether it’s beside the road, on our front steps, or anywhere else, animals left unattended are scared, confused, and at serious risk from:
Extreme temperatures, rain, or harsh weather
Encounters with wildlife or loose pets
Running into traffic
Dehydration, illness, or injury from stress and exposure
Even when it comes from a place of love, leaving animals like this puts them in danger.
If you ever need to surrender a pet or find a stray, HSHC asks people to please come inside and speak with our Client Services team. There’s no judgment — only help, understanding, and compassion.
We’re here with resources like:
A pet food pantry for struggling families
Low-cost vaccine clinics
A judgment-free environment to discuss rehoming options
Sometimes, just a few minutes of conversation can save a life
