In Wichita, Kansas, the shocking discovery of a mother goose and her six tiny goslings mowed down on McLean Street on Monday has residents in shock and brokenhearted, however they are angry – and really angry.

According to Kake News, local residents believe the killing of the Canada goose mom and her brood of babies had been done on purpose. The family had been crossing the road, and it appears a cruel driver ran them over on purpose.
The six goslings had been crossing the street in a row with ample room ahead and behind; being led to the other side by their mother. Witnesses say the car made no effort to avoid hitting the geese. After all, if a driver hit one baby, wouldn’t he have swerved to avoid striking the others with his vehicle?

Canada geese are a common sight in Kansas at this time of year. Bird and nature watchers enjoy seeing them arrive and raising their little ones. They are frequently seen crossing roads or grazing next to the Arkansas River and are federally protected.
According to the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 protects them. Without a permit, it’s a crime to intentionally harm or kill the animal.
The City of Wichita stated the incident was tragic and are urging people to be careful in the presence of wildlife and give them a wide berth on the roads.
Surely we can do better as humans. Be kind, be patient, and share our beautiful planet with wildlife – they have a right to live and raise their families here too!
