The Sparta Police Department responded to an emergency call this past Monday on New Jersey’s Lake Mohawk, after an eyewitness spotted a dog falling through the ice.
Patrolman Michael Poon, who is certified in ice rescue, donned the department’s ice rescue gear and crawled out onto the ice to reach the struggling dog. Without hesitation, the officer entered the icy water and pushed the dog back onto the ice, making sure the dog was able to run to the safety of the dry land.

We are incredibly grateful for Ptl. Poon’s courage and dedication, and we also want to thank the concerned citizens who immediately contacted us to report the dog in distress. Your quick action truly made a difference.
The dog has been identified as 10-year-old Sunkiss. His owner stated the dog is kept in the yard by an electric fence, but somehow Sunkiss’ canine curiosity was able to find a weak spot in the device enabling him to escape.
