Just three days ago, NYC Second Chance Rescue received a devastating call from a mother in tears; terrified of losing her six-year-old pug, Elsa. After being hit by a car, Elsa was rushed to a critical care hospital where x-rays revealed multiple breaks in her pelvis.
The family had no money to pay for Elsa’s treatment and were forced to take her home aware their beloved little pup might not survive without the needed veterinarian intervention and treatment.
The mother, knowing she had nowhere else to turn, called the rescue organization well-known for their compassion and ability to raise funding for emergency situations. And for Elsa, this was an emergency. The mother cried over the phone, and the cries of a young boy begging for help to save his dog had been heartbreaking.

Through the organization’s community outreach program, Keeping Families Together, rescuers believe no family should ever have to make the heartbreaking decision to say goodbye to a pet because of money. A promise was made to the family to fight for Elsa.
Elsa arrived at NYC Second Chance Rescue in serious condition. She received a full diagnostic workup, pain management, antibiotics and fluids. Elsa had been so incredibly lucky; she had no other internal injuries.
After a thorough evaluation, the surgeon determined that the best course of treatment was cage rest instead of surgery.
For some fractures, especially those in the pelvis, cage rest can be the preferred treatment. This is because the pelvis is a complex, ring-like structure, and many pelvic fractures can heal naturally with time and restricted movement. Surgery is often reserved for more severe cases, such as those that destabilize the pelvis, or affect the hip joints. In Elsa’s case, the surgeon believed her specific fractures would heal well with a non-surgical approach.
And now for the heartwarming update:
We are so happy to share that Elsa is now home and back with her family! Her mom shared this heartwarming photo of her son, who loves her so much. The thought of him losing his best friend was devastating, and we are so thankful that through our Families Together program, we were able to help.
Many thanks to the community for supporting Elsa’s care. Together we make miracles happen. Together we keep families together.
Get well soon Elsa.
