Heartbroken 14 year old dog who only had one home his entire life surrendered to New York shelter, but wait …

It had to have been a heartbreaking decision for the owners of a 14-year-old dog to surrender him to Animal Haven when the dog’s needs changed. Gandalf the Schnauzer had spent his entire life with one family, and in a blink the heartbroken dog’s life changed.

According to the shelter staff, Gandalf had serious dental disease and multiple cysts all over his body, but still his general health was fine.

Fortunately, the rescue organization decided to keep the dog out of the general doggy population area in a kennel which surely would have been too much of a shock for a dog who had only known his family, comfort and the stability of a home. Instead the senior pooch took up residency with the front desk team.

Check out poor Gandalf’s confusion:

“… wondering why the only family he had ever known left him behind.”

Gandolf was soon scheduled for his dental surgery and successfully recovered. And then it was time to find him a home. Social media strongly reacted to the dog’s situation. His video clips on TikTok garnered more than 1.1 million views.

His dental work was scheduled. It was time to relieve Gandalf’s pain:

“…thank you for the outpouring of support….”

The staff described him as good with people, children, dogs and most likely he would be fine with cats. Some comments were quite harsh against Gandalf’s previous owners, but his dental issues were so severe, maybe the owners were on a fixed income and couldn’t afford the care the dog needed? Maybe they surrendered him because they wanted him to have a better chance?

Gandalf had quite a few adoption applications, and we are thrilled to announce that Gandalf’s heartbreaking story ended up as one of “happily ever after.”

Gandalf’s new dad was literally waiting outside of Animal Haven before we opened the day after we posted his story. We know that Gandalf is going to be absolutely spoiled rotten for the rest of his days, living his best life with a big yard upstate with his new siblings. We could not have dreamt of a happier ending to his story.

Live a luxurious retirement Gandalf and we all love you.
