At the Orange County Animal Shelter in Orlando, Florida, Chey arrived at the shelter just about a month ago. There had been little doubt that the extremely frightened dog had been a victim of abuse and trauma; probably at the hands of the people who Chey trusted to be the humans she loved. She had completely shut down and she hoped she could disappear into the corner or the floor of her kennel.

Chey came in as the result of a resident’s report of an injured stray in her neighborhood.
Chey had been found with terrible injuries to her paw pads. They had been burned and just to walk was extremely painful for her. Add the trauma and abuse, Chey was too afraid to even move. She refused to leave her kennel and would “pancake” when the staff came to take her outdoors for a walk. She had to be carried out and was terrified of unfamiliar people and loud noises. In addition, she would cringe and jump when anyone even touched her.

.. her injured paws were from burns and it could have been something as walking on hot pavement for too long…
- Weeks later, Chey’s paws had healed, but according to the shelter, the psychological trauma remained, leaving her exhausted and stressed even by short walks. Although she was slowly making some progress, it still takes quite awhile for her to feel comfortable when she’s out of her kennel, and she remained quite stressed and jumpy.
- And all anyone can do is give her a little space, a lot of patience, and a lot of love.
This is Chey as posted by the shelter on Instagram.

People see her, and they want to take her outside; they want to love on her, they want to hug her and kiss her.
Chey is two years old, and she needed to be out of the noisy shelter environment. Fortunately rescue advocates worked closely with the shelter and have since procured a safe place for her. She has been transferred to a private rescue where the approach is slow and quiet. Another calm dog has been placed with her, and it is hoped she will discover life can be better than the terrible experiences she had to persevere in her past.
Get well soon Chey.
