Heartbreaking: Last chance needed for friendly and sweet mama and her puppies

Vakita and her puppies are in dire need of help. According to houstontx.gov/barc in Houston, the family needs a “rescue hold” by Monday afternoon.

Mother dogs and their puppies do not do well in the shelter long term because of their suppressed immune systems.

At this time, the puppies are too young to be separated from their mother, so a foster situation lasting for a few weeks until the puppies are old enough to be weaned, is the only solution.

Vakita arrived at the shelter as a stray with her six 2-day-old puppies. The family is in desperate need of immediate placement as the shelter is at critical capacity. This friendly mom needs a safe and quiet place to nurse and raise her babies.

#A2048581 Vakita (Mom) brought in as a stray on December 9. She is listed as a Staffordshire blend and believed to be about two years of age, weighing 38 pounds and has tested heartworm negative.

Puppies are one week old:

#A2048790 Vesper, 8791 Vanya, 8792,Vera, 8793, Vaughn, 8794, Vincenzo, and 8795 Vin.

A shelter volunteer has met and engaged with Vakita. Here is what she posted:

“What a super sweet and friendly mama. And her babies are so tiny. It looks like two are merle marble color and the rest are white. They’re gorgeous babies. She let me leash her, but did not want to leave her babies, so we just had a little bit of playtime right outside her kennel door, and then she was more than ready to back to her babies.”

These dogs can only be safely moved out of the shelter by an approved rescue organization.

Pledges will help attract a rescue. Rescues cannot intake animals without fosters.

  1. It is heartbreaking: I have the space to foster this gorgeous little family but I am in Washington state….. if anyone wants to send this family out here, I have a whole network of veterinary clinics that I work with and can provide references from multiple states.
