Heartbreaking: ‘Baby’ did her best to get well

What a sad and heartbreaking day at The Healthy Hearts and Paws Project in Ohio. Earlier in the week, the organization received an emergency call from Trumbull County 911 Dispatch. A dog had been discovered chained up in a basement at a residence on Oak Knoll in Warren.

The staff and volunteers quickly were dispatched to the home where the heartbreaking discovery was made. There she was – later named Baby – unresponsive lying alone at the bottom of the basement amid filth. She was emaciated, dehydrated and suffered from a ruptured mass on her abdomen. The bitter stench of infection wafted through the stale air of her bed.

Baby was in critical condition; she was rushed to Adamson Veterinary Service in Salem, Ohio where doctors tried to do everything they could to save her life.

Sometimes, with all the sadness in their hearts, rescuers and the veterinary staff made the decision to let Baby cross over the Rainbow Bridge.

The decision to let her go wasn’t easy, but it was the right thing to do — there simply was no coming back from the hell she was put through…

Although there is no happy ending to Baby’s story, all photos and information had been forwarded to the district attorney.

A first-degree misdemeanor charge of cruelty to animals was filed in Warren Municipal Court on Monday against Thomas R. Leimkuehler, 43, of Warren, who was arrested later that day. A felony prohibitions against companion animal charge was filed later against Leimkuehler; he was arraigned Tuesday morning and pleaded not guilty to violating prohibitions concerning companion animals, a fifth-degree felony. He is not allowed to possess any animals.

He has been released on $1,000 bond.

On Friday, according to Warren Municipal Court records, Stephanie J. Swegan, 53, was charged with prohibitions concerning companion animals, a fifth-degree felony.
