Happy outcome for bear with jar stuck on her head for nearly 2 weeks

A bear in Wisconsin is definitely breathing and eating better after having a plastic jar over her head was removed by wildlife experts.

The two-year-old sow had been spotted on July 26 in Sawyer County, and for the next week, she had traveled at least 50 miles with her ill-fitting and no doubt annoying head gear.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the bear would not have been able to eat, and likely survived because of her excess body fat, known to be significant at this time of year as bears eat more to gain weight in preparation for their winter hibernation.

Last Sunday, the bear returned back to the house where she had been originally spotted. Wildlife officers use a dart to sedate her and were soon able to cut the plastic jug. Her claw marks were evident as she had tried but failed to remove the jug off of her head.

Officials weighed her, stating she was extremely skinny from not being able to eat. She tipped the scale at 70 pounds, where at this time of year would likely have been at least 100 pounds. She probably drank water by dipping her entire head in water.

Luckily, the bear had no obvious injuries and was taken to an area to recover quietly with lots of food and water. When released, she ran over to a bush and didn’t wait long to dine on the berries.

Check out the video. Many thanks to this very kind family for caring about the bear and her survival.
