In Daytona Beach, Florida, a frightened and silent young dog was rescued on Sunday from the bottom of a trash compactor. The black and white pooch sat quietly amid the piles of trash at an apartment complex.

Brandon Arroyo and his wife Heather Jones, live in the apartment complex and received a call from another resident who found the dog inside the trash compartment. Brandon, who works for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, was deeply saddened and concerned that anyone would throw a dog away like this. Had it not been for someone finding it, the dog would have likely been killed.

It is believed the dog had been in the compactor for at least 12 hours. There are no security cameras which precludes trying to find out who abandoned him in such a cruel manner.
The kind couple went over and pulled the dog out of the trash compartment using a lead rope to slowly guide him closer to the opening until Brandon could scoop him up into his arms and bring him to safety.
They named him Daytona and took him home; the first move was to give him a bath. Initially, Daytona didn’t seem to be injured, but his rescuers noticed he had something going on with his hip. The dog seemed to be having difficulty walking.

On Tuesday, Daytona was on his way to the veterinarian where he has been x-rayed, will be neutered, and have “these floppy claws on the back that they want to remove because they tend to cause problems.”
The couple have decided to foster Daytona until he’s recovered and then find him a loving home. From the moment they rescued him, Daytona wanted to cuddle and be friends. Who could turn their backs on such a sweetheart?

The Daytona Beach Police are investigating the incident:
we want to assure our community that we are investigating this matter thoroughly and with the seriousness it deserves. The act of cruelty is unacceptable, and we are fully committed to pursuing all leads to identify and hold the responsible party accountable.
Brandon and Heather have set up a GoFundMe fundraiser to help with Daytona’s medical expenses. Daytona is looking better already.
