At the Pennsylvania SPCA, Bethann’s heartbreaking living conditions changed the day the Animal Law Enforcement team arrived at an illegal dog breeding kennel business in Snyder County. Acting on a tip about dogs living in the most deplorable conditions, in less than 24-hours after the local dog warden’s report, officers served a warrant at the illegal kennel.

What authorities found was devastating; multiple Shiba Inus, like Bethann along with poodle mixes; all the dogs had been living in horrible conditions. Some were injured, most were terrified and sadly, none had known any real care or compassion.

Bethann had lived a heartbreaking life until rescuers finally arrived. She had been confined to a raised cage surrounded by filth and her own excrements. Her one eye had been badly deformed by a condition left untreated for a long period of time. One can only imagine the pain she silently endured because of the indifference from her breeder.
No one knows for sure how long Bethann suffered, but from the day help arrived, this sweet dog’s life has changed for the better.
And then it was finally Bethann’s turn to be noticed, and it was to be her time to heal. She was transferred to the Philadelphia headquarters where she was examined and given the medical attention she needed. Sadly, it was too late to save her eye, and the decision was made for surgical enucleation.

But Bethann is a survivor! Everyday she takes one small step forward. She is beginning to trust again and is learning that people can be kind.
