Dog surrendered to NYC shelter by family because ‘he has cancer’

On January14, Toby was walked into the Queens Animal Care Center and surrendered by the family the dog had lived with for six years. His intake notes stated they were relinquishing ownership of Toby because “he has cancer.”

Although Toby’s complete behavioral and health notes have not been shared at this time, it is known his family no longer wanted him because he was sick. Toby is six-years-old, weighs 85 pounds, is well-trained and easy to love.

Toby’s exact medical diagnostics have not been released, however shouldn’t a family want to be with their dog when he needs their love, help and devotion the most?

According to his advocates, he loves being next to people, loves napping on the couch, likes to take walks to explore the world and deserves to spend his best life being loved.

Owner surrender notes:

“Toby is a 6 year old, large mixed breed husky whose family relinquished him to the Care Center because he has cancer. His family stated he is a very loving, affectionate, and a social dog. He spends most of his time in the living room. He has been to the groomer, and allowed his previous family to bathe him, brush him and trim his nails. With his previous family he would go on two 15-minute walks a day. He has been crate trained, but does not do well. He loves car rides. He knows sit, paw, and go to bed. He knows Spanish.”
