In Fort Meyers, Florida, Lee County deputies responding to a local neighbor’s report about suspected animal abuse and neglect, discovered 13 puppies covered in dirt and feces in a woman’s garage with no food or water. All of the puppies were heavily infested with fleas.

The garage was not ventilated and had no air-conditioning. When officers from the Lee County Department of Animal Services arrived, they recorded temperatures in the garage at 104-degrees.

Upon arrival, deputies were informed by concerned neighbors that they had been hearing multiple puppies whining throughout the day from inside the home’s garage. Given the high outdoor temperatures, residents feared for the animals’ well-being.
Ayana Lee Constantine, 37, was arrested and charged with 13 counts of animal neglect. Two adult dogs were also found in the home.

The puppies were then taken to the Gulf Coast Humane Society; one puppy with an injured leg has been receiving medical care. As of Friday, both the Cape Coral Animal Shelter and the Gulf Coast Humane Society are hoping to find homes for the puppies and have most of them available for adoption. They have received their vaccinations, been spayed or neutered and microchipped.
