K-9 Max is recovering after he suffered heat exhaustion while working outdoors during soaring heat temperatures in Dallas, Texas while in pursuit of a suspect. The two-year-old German shepherd received a hero’s welcome from officers, handlers and support personnel at the Dallas Police Department as he was being released from the veterinarian hospital after receiving treatment and a well-deserved rest.

Our K9 officers are some of the best on this Department. Yesterday, K9 Max got sick after chasing and catching a suspect in the Texas heat. He’s made a great recovery and is headed home this afternoon with his partner!

Just last week Max showed signs of a heat or cold related illness. Police rushed him to the emergency vet for treatment. The K9 handlers are trained to recognize signs of heat exhaustion and are very careful during extreme temperatures.

All police vehicles are equipped with heat alarms and handlers must conduct weekly checks to make sure the systems are working properly. According to protocol, dogs can not be left unattended for more than ten minutes in a patrol vehicle.
Max has been resting and is expected to make a full recovery.
