On Wednesday, October 15, 2025, officers with the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) responded to a report of a domestic violence protection order violation at a residence in Gorgeted Quail Grove.
When officers arrived, they encountered a suspect who had barricaded himself inside of the home. The Tactical Enforcement Unit (TEU) and K9 officers were deployed to assist in resolving the situation and taking the suspect into custody.

As K9 Roam, his handler and the Tactical Enforcement Unit approached the suspect, K9 Roam was stabbed multiple times.
The police dog was immediately transported to an emergency veterinary hospital where he underwent multiple surgeries on his neck, abdomen and leg. His handler said he pulled through surgery and lifted his head to look around and even wagged his tail a few times. Tragically, K9 Roam lost a hind leg due to the serious laceration near the leg on his abdomen.

K9 Roam will be rehabbing and has taken a few steps, although he is not out of the woods yet. During the police conference, it was explained K9s get their vests at 20 months because they are still growing; Rome was 18 months.
No human officers were injured during the confrontation. The suspect was later struck with a chemical irritant and tased before he was able to subdued and taken into custody.
Due to the severity of the attack on K9 Roam, the CSPD Homicide Unit is leading the investigation into the attempted killing of a police service animal.
