The Lancaster Animal Care Center located near Los Angeles shared a heartwarming story about a female dog guarding five puppies; soon to have been determined were not hers by birth. Let’s just call her their puppies’ “bonus mom”, named Tia.
The discovery had been made in later November when Tia had been found in a field caring for five tiny puppies. It is believed Tia had found the puppies and stepped in to be their protector. Veterinarians examined her and determined Tia had not given birth recently. Maybe she was a gentle “aunt” making sure her nieces and nephews were safe.
Rescuers determined it had been her maternal instincts that had driven her to care for the abandoned pups as if they were her own; keeping them safe until they were rescued. The puppies had no issues with their “aunt” – they played, the tumbled and cozied up to Tia.

Stray mother dogs are very protective of their own litters. In some cases, as with Tia, a female dog with strong maternal instincts can take on the role of protector for an abandoned litter. Thanks Tia – you are a hero.
The puppies were named Alyssa, Ivan, Bernadette, Paulette and Serenity.
Here’s the family, and here are the updates. We are so happy to say Tia has been adopted too along with most of the puppies. Please make sure to check for availability.
Make sure to check with the shelter for the adoption status of the remaining puppies.
