Best friends walked 3 miles to shelter: 13-year-old Mishi surrendered when her dad faced homelessness but her story doesn’t end there

Mishi and her human had been best friends for 13 years; yes, since the black terrier blend had been a tiny puppy. The two had been tightly bonded; Mishi was always by her human’s side.

Sometimes, humans have to make heartbreaking decisions for the benefit of their dogs, and when Mishi’s owner had been evicted and faced homelessness, a heart wrenching decision for his best friend’s welfare had to be made.

About three weeks ago, Mishi and her human walked three miles to Anita’s Stevens Swan Humane Society in Utica, New York. Her owner had no other choice but to make the heartbreaking decision to surrender her. The tears flowed, and when Mishi’s owner left, the dog mourned deeply. She cried, she whined, and she couldn’t bear the separation from the one best friend and companion she had ever known.

The staff were also heartbroken, but knew they had to step in and try to help mend Mishi’s broken heart – even just a little. They immediately made her comfortable; fresh water, food, toys and soft fluffy blankets were placed in her kennel, but still her plaintive cries could not be silenced.

Desperate to find her human, Mishi clawed at her kennel door trying to escape so she could find and be reunited with her person. And even as two weeks quickly went by and Mishi seemed to be welcoming the attention and love she was receiving at the rescue organization, she still yearned for a home.

Her veterinary examination found her in fairly good health for a 13-year-old dog:

After a veterinary evaluation, it does appear that she may have a neurological issue affecting her back legs, causing her back end to sway. However, she is still capable of walking, going for walks, and getting around just fine. We recommend limiting long walks …

Mishi reportedly did well with other animals and loved children in her previous home.

And then came Mishi’s miracle. She was adopted!

Just two days ago, her new mom shared this photo along with a heartwarming message:

This is Mishi, happy in her new home. I’m so glad she’s here keeping me company.

She’s living her best life now. Many thanks to everyone who shared her story; sharing saves lives. (I see you smiling!)
