Baby dolphin stranded on rock jetty unable to swim rescued by Miami lifeguards

Sometimes Mother Nature needs a little help with those fins and flippers. On Saturday, the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue lifeguards responded to reports concerning an injured baby dolphin that had beached itself on the rock jetty at Haulover Beach.

When lifeguards arrived, they spotted the calf trying to right itself and swim away. It may have been struck by a vessel or possibly attacked by a shark.

The lifeguards safely removed the dolphin from the rocks.

MDFR lifeguards transferred the dolphin to the care of @myfwc, where it will hopefully recover from its injuries and be released back into the wild.

Dolphins are mammals, and while they do live in the ocean and appear fish-like, they have the characteristics that classify them as mammals, which includes being warm-blooded, breathe air through blowholes, give birth to live young (they have belly buttons) and nurse their offspring with milk. In addition, dolphins also have spines which is a characteristic of mammals.
