Los Angeles is a big place for a lost little dog. Someone abandoned him, and he could barely figure out how to survive, although his instincts told him to hide and only venture out when it would be safe to find something to eat.

Neighbors had seen the small dog dumped out of a car days before, and although kind strangers tried to capture him to help, the frightened little dog was having nothing to do with humans. After all, the person he had trusted the most in life had abandoned him. What could he have done wrong?
And now it turned out to be life on the streets.

Someone had thrown out an old mattress, and this little dog had made it his home. He slept there, albeit with one eye open, but at least he felt safe. He stayed there and guarded his tiny place of comfort, refusing anyone’s help who tried to coax him out. Instead, he would run to the corner, wait until the danger passed, circle back and hide behind the mattress once again.
Independent rescuer Suzette Hall had been called to help, and she began the hour’s drive equipped with tasty treats and humane traps. And on the way, Hall received the most heartbreaking news; the trash company had just arrived and taken away his little mattress. It had been his only sense of security, and now it was gone.
At least the men sent to pick up the mattress had left behind a pillow and the food the neighbors had left, but the saddest little pup had lost his “tiny home.”

When volunteer Rosario first arrived, she spotted him curled up, fast asleep and cuddled next to that old mattress, but after it was hauled away, he was lost. Now he was confused and didn’t know where to go or what to do.
Tears filled Suzette’s eyes when she arrived because there he was – in the middle of the street nervously packing back and forth and looking for the mattress he called home.

I got my trap out as fast as I could, set it, and oh my goodness — he was starving. He went in almost instantly. All the neighbors were so grateful; they had tried so hard for days to help him, but he was just too scared.
He has a severe skin infection and was covered in fleas. This poor dog has suffered more than any dog should ever suffer.
But now, he is safe.
Maybe the trash company took his mattress, but that’s okay — because now he’ll get a much better one. He will soon be cuddling in a soft, warm bed in a real home. And that will be the beginning of his brand-new story.
