A photographer had been on an early walk to capture the morning sunrise along a Stuart beach when she spotted a loggerhead turtle in distress; it had been stuck between a set of rocks.

According to social media reports, Suzanne Cosme had been on the House of Refuge beach when she saw the turtle unable to move. Cosme called the sheriff’s office and was transferred to the Fish and Wildlife Commission. Officers were sent out to assist.

Martin County Fire and Rescue crews teamed up with the Martin County Sheriff’s Office and Good Samaritans to help the sea turtle return to the ocean.

The mother loggerhead had come ashore to lay eggs and became wedged while trying to make it back to the water. She was weak from trying hard to free herself.

The first responders used straps and a rescue board to get her back onto the sand.

The best part was watching the sea turtle walk down the sand towards the ocean and begin her swim.

Anyone who sees an injured sea turtle is asked to contact the FWC’s Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888.404.FWCC (3922).
