Arlow, a bloodhound, had been having the worst of luck. Before arriving at the All Hound Rescue of Florida, (AHRF)in Port St. Lucie, he had been returned to a nearby county shelter twice. It had not been his personality or the 120-pound size of the dog that had Arlow coming back to the shelter. Rather it had been the dog’s sad and obviously infected eyes, absent a proper diagnosis and treatment, that had brought him back to the shelter by both of his past owners.

But then Arlow’s luck changed. AHRF had been in search of a bloodhound they had taken in but had recently been missing. Searching everywhere, including the nearby shelters, they found Arlow, describing him on their Facebook page as a “sweet, squishy, wrinkly 120 pound hound.”

And so he went home to AHRF, where veterinarian consultations and diagnosis indicated Arlow needed a costly medical procedure for Entropion, to help correct his eye issues. The common eyelid condition causes the eyelids to roll inward, irritating the eye’s surface. The inward rolling usually causes the hair on the surface of the eyelid to rub against the cornea. This painful condition can also cause corneal ulcers, perforations and or pigment developing on the cornea which can lead to blindness.
Without the surgery, Arlow’s quality of life would greatly suffer according to the rescue organization or to a fate even worse.

Fortunately fundraising events, charitable donations and help during community events, have helped to give Arlow a new chance at life. Arlow underwent surgery last Friday and is currently in a foster home. His surgery has cost more than $2,300, and “so far so good.”
He is expected to be available for adoption soon.

And doubly as cool, the missing hound has been found! More details about the rescue organization’s adoption process can be found at allhoundrescue.org.
