Service dogs are just brilliant, and the time spent loving and training them puts us all in awe of both the trainers and the dogs.
In a remarkable post and video posted from the group, Sampson the Service Dog, we met a service dog in training named Pax. These dogs begin with learning basic obedience commands like sit, down, come, stay and leave it. They also learn to respond to their handler’s name. Some dogs are taught to react to specific sounds – baby crying, knocking, fire alarms or when someone calls them. And many of these remarkable canines can also open and close doors and/or perform specialty commands such as pull blankets on and off, open and close blinds, turn lights off and on or deliver items to their handlers.
There doesn’t seem to be many things a trained service canine is not able to do – find a missing person, help a disabled handler, detect allergies and surely the list goes on.
So let’s hone in on a special skill one might not even think of, but while in training, Pax sure did learn something new, and once he mastered the skill, there was one happy and rewarded pup.
In the video below, the young Labrador retriever, Pax had taken a trip to the Tucson Airport over the weekend. Everything was progressing so smoothly; that is until Pax spotted the moving sidewalk along the terminal route to his mom’s departure gate. For service dogs, the ability to rush through the airport terminals, handle escalators and moving sidewalks are a must.

(Gotta love the “jump”)
A lesson for Pax can certainly provide all of us with a few successful training techniques. If a dog shows resistance to a new experience. the best way to handle the situation is to make it less scary. Through trust, kindness, positive reinforcement and patience, Pax was able to work through his fears.
Check out how happy he is now and how proud he is.
