Rescuers rush to aid of terribly neglected dog found lying in driveway of rural Pennsylvania home

On the morning of July 4th – when families were waking up to celebrate with picnics and fireworks, a terribly neglected dog felt so weak, all he could do was lie down in someone’s driveway in the area of Shillington, Pennsylvania, known as a family-friendly and peaceful town.

No one was sure what had happened to this dog, but a call out for help for a soul in desperate need, sent volunteers from PA Pitstop rushing to the location. The independent rescue organization, located in Berks County, is where animals can come for comfort, healing or just a place to stay (a pit stop) along their journey finding their forever home.

Yesterday was no exception.

Come along with us as this German shepherd truly fights for his life; and even though he was extremely frightened as strangers leashed him, all he could do was to lie down. The next step was to keep him calm and help to gain his trust, so that he could be safely placed in the dog carrier and on his way to Pet Doctor 911.

Slowly, his rescuers gained the dog’s confidence, and it’s not as if he had any reason to trust humans – his new name would be Baron which means “warrior.”

Baron was immediately brought into the veterinary hospital to be initially weighed and examined in order to be administered pain medication. He was muzzled for the protection of the veterinarians and staff treating him as well as for his own safety. The dog was in pain, and although he had not shown any aggression, pain can sometimes cause reactions.

What kind of life did seven-year-old Baron have before yesterday? His veterinarians examined him and at least found his bloodwork was decent although his elevated white blood cells indicated infections from his open wounds. His lungs did sound clear. Baron’s right hind femur snapped, his right elbow is necrotic, his right ear is infected, he’s anemic, he suffers from mange and is heart worm positive. In addition he also has a bullet lodged in his neck.

And if all that is overwhelming just for a dog, there is no doubt Baron wants to live. His belly was full of dirt he was eating in an attempt to stave off his intense hunger and his teeth are ground down to his gums. Baron continues to fight for his life.

imagine the strength it required to survive in his condition, while people witnessed and did nothing. PA Pitstop will assure compassion, love and care.
