In Fort Pierce, Florida, a small dog was rescued on Thursday morning from the rubble of a home completely destroyed by a tornado from Hurricane Milton.
It had been a resident of the Spanish Lakes Country Club Village, a 55+ year and older adult community, who spotted Lulu, a Shih Tzu, who survived her terrible ordeal. CBS News reported Morgan Rynor was at the scene when Lulu was found. It had been Morgan’s photographer who had heard barking in the background.
so we ran to the pile of debris. we started searching and then one of the neighbors came over and the neighbor says, ‘he knows benji’s name’ and Lulu recognized the voice.
Lulu wasn’t the only canine survivor. The neighbor who found Lulu in the debris originally thought the dog was a different family’s pet named Benji. Fortunately, Benji had already been reunited with his family.
Lulu had been missing since Wednesday after tornadoes ravaged the subdivision. The following day, Lulu was taken to the veterinarian and is currently being treated for skin infections. The two people who lived with Lulu did not survive. Her immediate family, Alejandro Alonso and Mary Grace Viramontez were the dog’s owner. Their grandson, Victor Linero has offered to care for the 14-year-old dog.
Just an added positive note, Lulu’s canine buddy, Shiba, a Rottweiler, also survived and was found later in the day.
Rescuers, police and emergency workers went door to door to find survivors and attend to the injured. Six people died after two tornadoes from Hurricane Milton touched down at the community.
