In Duluth, Minnesota, a family’s cat probably used more than one of his nine lives after surviving underground for nearly two months. The cat, named Drifter, went missing in July after a construction crew had capped a sewer opening down the street and covered the area with rocks.
According to WhsvNews, the cat’s owner, Clif Nesseth, said the family had been searching for Drifter ever since he disappeared. Who would have known that Tuesday, the surprise of a lifetime would change that when neighborhood children said they heard meows coming from underneath a blocked storm drain?
Nesseth rushed over to the area, and the family dug out the dirt and cut a hole in a piece of fabric that had been used to temporarily seal the drain opening. Once that was removed, there popped out Drifter – his head and paws holding onto the opening. The family happily pulled him to safety.
It may have been Nesseth’s daughter who helped Drifter find his way to the drain. The 12-year-old, named April, had been calling for Drifter every day since he disappeared. On Tuesday, he may have heard her calling his name and went to the right spot.
No one knows how Drifter was able to survive for nearly two months. His health check at the veterinarian office said he lost about eight pounds, but is expected to make a full recovery.
Many thanks to all the neighbors who always kept a lookout for Drifter. That is one lucky kitty.
