At the Newhouse Wildlife Rescue, located in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, a most poignant story of rescue and a mother’s love, continues to reinforce our respect and admiration for wildlife and their commitment and their emotional bonds to their young.
A mother skunk had been rescued from an illegal leghold trap which had severely injured her leg. The rescue organization couldn’t release her back into the wild because she never would have survived. The staff also noticed the female skunk had been lactating, and there was a strong possibility she still had been nursing her babies. For days, Animal Control had been combing the area looking for the little ones, but there had been no luck.
And then this happened. Whether or not you believe in fate depends solely on your own opinions, but:

We had received an orphaned baby skunk around the same time we received the injured mother. It occurred to us to introduce these two. We placed the baby in front of her…
Noting again, this was not the mother skunk’s own baby, but when the little one was placed close to her, the mother skunk gently placed the baby in her mouth and pulled it close to her. She then situated her body in front of the little guy to protect him for the humans watching.
She was a mother without her babies and he was a baby without his mother.
And then they had each other.
The next day, the mother skunk’s babies were found, and they were all reunited. Now they had a new sibling to meet.
Down the road, the mother skunk did recover from her injuries, and when all the babies were about ready to be ushered back into the wild, the mom was released also.
Please respect all wildlife; they deserve to live, raise their families and be free. We owe it to our wildlife.
