Dave Crowthers and his family are grieving the loss of their 23-year-old son, Samuel, who passed away on July 14. The young man lost his life in Tampa trying to save his Doberman Pinscher, named Kilo.
According to the Dobie Ranch Rescue, located in Crystal River, Florida, there had been an accident and Kilo fled. Sam ran for his dog and had his arms around him, when he was struck by a vehicle killing Kilo instantly and later Sam.
Sam’s obituary included the following heartbreaking news about the accident:
Sam was a proud and loving dog-dad to Kilo, who tragically passed away with him in the unfortunate accident. In his final act of selflessness, Sam was trying to save Kilo when they were both hit by a car. As an organ donor, Sam saved numerous lives, dying a hero. His honor walk to the operating room was epically attended.
The relationship and bond between Sam and Kilo had been extraordinarily close. What happened is so truly tragic. Not only was Sam a hero for his dog, Sam was also an organ donor, and now has become a hero to humans in need.
Finding peace is a very hard thing to do when a tragedy like this strikes. Sam’s obituary can be found online, and Dave has asked for donations to be made in Sam and Kilo’s honor to Dobieranchrescue.com, along with several other organizations.
Everyone at Dobie Ranch Rescue hopes that somehow Sam knows the deep respect they have for him for making the ultimate sacrifice for Kilo.

Rest in peace Sam and Kilo. We know you two are together.
