At the Montgomery Humane Society in Montgomery, Alabama, a male dog was found Thursday, September 12, “barely hanging on.” The dog rescuers dubbed him Chance; the sweet pup had been soaked in motor oil and then abandoned. He was found alone on Overhill Road, (Zip code: 36116).

Chance was immediately rushed to the rescue organization’s partner veterinarian’s who worried the dog might not survive. He was severely anemic, and it was unknown as to the amount of oil he likely inhaled and ingested. The first order of business for Chance was to stabilize his condition – deemed to be extremely critical.

The dog was administered fluids, a blood transfusion and given activated charcoal to help rid his body of toxins. The first night Chance spent at the hospital was “touch and go.” Somehow, despite all the challenges he has faced, this determined pooch keeps his chin up.
By the following morning, “sweet” Chance was strong enough to continue diagnostics. After x-rays were performed, it was found he also suffered from a broken pelvis and a dislocated hip. The injuries happened some time in the past, and he had fractures in three different places.
According to the shelter, Chance has had a miserable life – so sad, they say if the dog could talk, we would all cry:
Chances body composition score was rated at a 1 which means that on top of all the other indicators of abuse, he also suffered unimaginable hunger. We don’t know if he was purposely starved or if the untreated damage to hips have not allowed his colon to work properly. Only time will tell and it’s an issue that is being monitored closely.
Chance is currently being held at the vet’s office. His prognosis remains guarded, but he has been doing better.
The latest update indicates his bloodwork has improved and headed in the right direction. He has been eating and drinking, however there are still major concerns. On one side of his body, he has a dislocated hip. On the other side, he has three breaks in his pelvis.

It is still unknown if the dog’s digestive system has suffered as a result of the injuries to his pelvis and hip. This situation is critical to his future and is being closely monitored. Chance has not gone to the bathroom yet. The staff is eagerly awaiting a healthy bowel movement.
This could be a result malnutrition. If that’s the case, replacing the missing nutrients and hydration will help. Though we hope this is the case it is also very possible that his digestive system has suffered as a result of the injuries sustained to his pelvis and hip. As stated before this situation is critical to his future well being and is being monitored closely.
Please note the shelter staff have received several messages asking about next steps. Please be patient as Chance battles alongside the vet team providing him with the best care. The care he is receiving now and the care he will receive in the future, is because of the generosity and care of the people helping.
