In Madison Heights, Michigan, an animal rescuer was beaten to death with a pipe on Christmas Eve as he tried to save a dog that was being abused by his neighbor.

According to ClickonDetroit, Robert “Bobby” Cavanaugh, 60, had been riding his bicycle around the neighborhood when he saw one of his neighbors beating a dog. Cavanaugh, known as a life long animal lover and animal rescuer, rushed over to intervene, but the neighbor turned his attack on the man with a pipe. Cavanaugh suffered extensive injuries which led to his death.

On a GoFundMe page for the family, Bobby’s sister wrote the following:

Bobby was beaten to death with a pipe by a man who had been released from jail from repeated prison sentences.

our family wants to honor him and give him a proper burial as the hero he was trying to save an animal and is now gone from a brutal attack.

When authorities arrived at the scene, Cavanaugh was unresponsive and profusely bleeding. He died at the scene due to blunt force trauma. An eyewitness stated the man who had been beating his dog resented Cavanaugh’s interference stating it was his dog and none of anyone else’s business.

The suspect has not been named, however he has a long history of past violence. He remains in custody.

The victim’s sister described her brother as a wonderful person who always stood up and helped abused and neglected animals.

Rest in peace Bobby.
