In an unimaginable tragedy, an overnight fire at the No Dogs Left Behind Animal Shelter in Canton, resulted in the deaths of all 44 dogs. The “fast moving fire” broke out at 1:00 a.m. Thursday. The fire had engulfed the entire building and killed all of the dogs before the Canton Fire Department had been able to save them.

A passerby had spotted the flames coming from a building at that location and called 911. Chief McGregor (4-1) checked enroute at 0100 hours. At 0103, FF Wayne Stripp, who lives less than a mile away from the fire location, advised it was a confirmed working fire. Chief McGregor then activate the taker task force for that zone along with manpower from Pierrepont fire. The tanker task force would bring tankers from Pierrepont Fire , West Potsdam Fire, Potsdam Fire, Pyrites Fire, and Russell Fire to the scene. Engine 7 was enroute at 0105 ,arriving on scene at 0112. Firefighters were met with heavy fire in the kennel building

The building included kennels inside with a play area outside.

In a heartbreaking post on Facebook from the rescue group, the dogs who perished in the fire had been recent survivors rescued from being slaughtered in Asia’s dog meat industry and war-torn countries. Just days ago, volunteers and activists launched an attack against a dog trafficker in East Asia; more of the hundreds of dogs the organization has been fighting to save!

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

There were no firefighter or civilian injuries. Thirteen Canton Fire members responded and all units were back in service at 0611 hours.

No Dogs Left Behind founder, Jeffrey Beri plans to rebuild. Donations are being accepted at nodogsleftbehind.com.
