13-year-old Labrador retriever finally gets a name at shelter and now waits for loving home

A 13-year-old Labrador retriever at the Downey Animal Shelter in Downey, California is happily snoozing in his kennel. Perhaps it is the first time in the dog’s life he has ever slept on a bed and been fed regularly?

On July 10, the dog arrived at the shelter as an owner surrender due to “old age.” Up until that day, photos of the dog had gone viral on social media – showing the senior dog tied to a short tether barely able to lie down or even reach his food bowl. The owners said the dog had been left behind by the previous owners, so they kept him – and left him in the backyard to be a guard dog.

Animal control officers were repeatedly called by neighbors; finally something positive happened for the poor pup.

When he arrived at the shelter, he had a wire around his neck. When the staff asked for the dog’s information, the owner admitted he had never given the dog a name and had no idea what the dog had been named before he found him abandoned in the yard of his home when he moved in.

So now meet AUGGIE. (shelter staff named him) This is what we know about him. Because of the dog’s age he can be released on a medical waiver, but is rescue only. He is very guarded and has difficulty walking and standing. He only weighs 44 pounds, but has a great appetite and when offered tasty canned food, he really enjoyed the treat.

Physical observation:

Overall body posture: Reluctant to approach, Stiff/tense, Frozen, Flattened,

Ears: To side,

Eyes: Whale eye, Hard stare

Mouth: Lip lift/showing teeth

Vocalizing: Growling

Other behavior observations: tense; tries to bite

Gender: Intact Male

Auggie is rescue only with a known history of aggression. Disclosure, very tense tries to bite.

After such a miserable life, who can blame Auggie for being tense and defensive? Has anyone ever taken the time or effort to socialize him? Maybe when he was young, he was friendly and loving? Some volunteers, however have stated the dog showed no aggression. He barely moved and could hardly stand.

No doubt this is a hard case, but Auggie deserves better. Please share with approved rescue organizations, friends, family and social media contacts. Sharing saves lives. Follow here.
