At the Pennsylvania SPCA, it was just a few days ago when an individual entered the lobby with a big box. Inside was a 72 pound husky mix looking up at the staff; one blue eye and one brown eye plaintively seeking help for the pain he had obviously been suffering.

The person who arrived with the dog claimed to be the owner, and he had been looking for treatment for his dog at the organization’s wellness center, however the dog’s injuries were so severe, he needed critical emergency treatment and was referred to an emergency veterinarian. The owner agreed and seemingly left to seek care for his dog.

Sadly, that had not happened. Just a few minutes later, the dog had been abandoned, still in the box at the Pennsylvania SPCA. With no time to waste, the pup was immediately transferred to the organization’s hospital where deep, open wounds on his hind legs; the worse on his right leg with bone exposure and torn tendons, were treated. Veterinarians suspect he had been hit by a car.

What was the most heartbreaking was that the wounds seemed old – meaning the accident may have happened some time ago. And Tarzan had been suffering. For just how long, we may never know.

The dog did have a microchip; his name is Tarzan, and his case has been referred to the Animal Law Enforcement team. Instead of providing the dog with proper veterinary care, the alleged owner abandoned Tarzan in his hour of the dog’s most critical need.

Tarzan underwent surgery to clean and close his wounds. He receives daily bandage changes and remains on antibiotics and pain medication to ensure his comfort. Initially it was thought he might need to have one of his legs amputated, but the veterinarians are still hopeful the damage will heal.

Tarzan has not had it easy; he is barely two-years-old, and a shelter is no place for this sweet guy to recover. On the positive front, he has a new chapter beginning, and we hope someone sees his face and empathizes with his plight – could he be the one for you? Please consider becoming Tarzan’s foster parent.

Today is also $5 Friday, and the Pennsylvania SPCA is asking for your support of dogs just like Tarzan.
