For more than a month, in Westminster, California, a tiny stray pup had only known a dirty, old mattress near the trash underneath a building as her home. The dog would sleep on the mattress, and people would leave her food, hoping she would approach them so they could help her, but the frightened dog was so skittish, she would make a beeline to escape from anyone getting too close.

For nearly a week, popular rescuer Suzette Hall, founder of the rescue, Logan’s Legacy 29, started in memory of her son, had been trying to rescue the dog. She had set multiple traps, but this dog was exceptionally clever, and instead of walking into the humane trap to eat the food, this dog pulled the towel out with her teeth where the food had been the bait. Then she would run and hide in the locked area where electrical equipment had been stored.

Hall’s next move was to contact the property manager, and together they formulated a plan. The manager unlocked the gate and secured the hole in the rear of the property where the dog would hide. Baby gates were set up all around the perimeter, so when she entered the area, she would be blocked and could finally be captured.

And then the “best laid plans of mice and men often goes awry.” The clever pooch was able to literally “pancake” her body so flat she was able to get into the hole that had been blocked and found her way 30 feet deep into the hole under the building.

And for those of you who know Suzette, and for other people who are reading about her animal rescue experiences for the first time, this is a woman who doesn’t give up. And so it was time to formulate “Plan B.”

Officers from the Westminster Animal Control arrived and waited for hours until the feisty canine reappeared. Early Wednesday morning, the dog cautiously appeared out of the hole, but as soon as the dog spotted Suzette, she retreated.

There is nothing better than rescue and animal Control working together. Complete teamwork. We came up with a plan. AC would be at one end and I went to the other end to blow a blow horn. It worked! She came out of the hole and safely inot Animal Control’s net.

Many thanks to Officers’ Serrato and Nunez of Westminster Animal Control, and to Tracy and Alma for all of their help. The dog is currently at the shelter for stray hold, but now she has a clean blanket and even a toy.

Suzette will be claiming her as soon as her stray hold is over. This dog has been rescued.

Once she is with Suzette, she will be fully vetted and cared for until she is adopted.
