In Durham, England, six tiny cocker spaniel puppies were rescued by police officers from a sure death after a man was spotted “swinging a sealed carrier bag” at the edge of a steep bank. According to the Durham Constabulary, police officers had been traveling along a highway on March 18, when they noticed a car parked on the side of the road and a man swinging the bag.

Officers pulled up to the man in their vehicle and flashed their lights to get a better look. That was when they noticed how the man quickly threw the carrier bag back into his car and then pretended to be checking his tires.

The officers got out of their patrol vehicle, and as they approached the man’s car, heard squealing sounds coming from the passenger side. As they got closer, it was clear that had been the same bag the man had been swinging over the cliff.

As the officers opened the sealed bag, they were surprised to find six cocker spaniel puppies whose eyes hadn’t even opened yet. The man was arrested on charges of animal cruelty, money laundering and trafficking in a controlled drug. He has since bonded out of jail.

The puppies are in the care of a local veterinarian and are being treated for severe flea infestations. As part of the investigation, the officers searched the man’s home and were able to rescue the mother and father of the puppies. They have all been reunited and are receiving treatment.

Both myself and luke are huge dog lovers, so it has been one of those jobs which has really stuck with us, we’ve hardly stopped thinking about it but are just glad to have saved them – it really was the right place, right time.
