The red wolf species, one of two wolf species in North America, is listed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List. The species is “critically endangered” which is one step before being listed as “extinct in the wild.” The new litter has two females and four males.

Zookeepers and veterinary staff are monitoring the new family via camera, and conducting regular checks on the babies. Despite being first-timers, Camelia and Uyosi are great parents and vigilant caregivers for their new brood.

Barriers around most of the red wolf enclosure will remain in place for a few more weeks, and zoo visitors are being asked to keep voices low near their exhibit as the new family continues to bond.

As of this year, there are between 23 to 25 red wolves in the wild and 278 in captivity, according to the United States Wildlife Service.

In order to help the species, the Red Wolf Species Survival Plan, which is overseen by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The last litter of red wolves occurred in 2016.
