An 85-year-old woman died after an alligator attacked her while the woman walked her dog in St. Lucie County. The woman had been walking her dog near a pond in the golf community where she lived.
According to WeshNews, the woman tried to free her dog when the gator grabbed it, but fell victim to the reptile and had been dragged into the water. Rescue workers and firefighters recovered the woman’s body from Spanish Lakes Fairway.
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers and St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office ordered a nuisance alligator trapper to the scene. The woman’s dog survived the attack. The alligator was hooked and dragged out of the pond.
Neighbors in the community said that alligators are frequently seen in the area, but none had ever attacked anyone.
In the last decade, Florida has average eight unprovoked alligator bites requiring medical attention each year.
