A brave labradoodle named Harper is being hailed as a hero after he scared off a black bear entering into his Chatham, New York home last Monday. The family’s home security camera captured the moment the bear entered the home.

According to Good Morning America, Stephanie Behren’s dog spotted the bear checking out the kitchen in search of food. The camera, placed in the living room, showed the bear carefully pushing his way through the glass door and then sneaking off towards the kitchen counter.

Harper is shown running into the living room; he had been wearing a purple and white bandana. That’s when the dog spots the bear who runs away and quickly backs out of the door.

Stephanie is then seen entering the room and runs over to the glass patio doors and shuts it. Then she could be heard shouting at the bear to get away. Harper barked until the bear left, and then he walked away as if his job had been done.

New York State has approximately 6,000 to 8,000 black bears. The Department of Environmental Conservation urges all residents to make sure no food is left out and trash receptables are tightly shut. Do not leave out bird food and make sure outdoor grills are thoroughly cleaned.

It is a crime to intentionally feed bears in New York State.
